The Indian Minister of Finance, Shri Arun Jaitley, will unveil the new statue of Mahatma Gandhi on Parliament Square in London this coming Saturday, March 14.
‘The statue will help ensure that the legacy of Gandhi lives on for future generations,’ said Minister Jaitley.
‘It also marks an important, historic moment celebrating the strong bond between our two nations. India and the UK share the same values and we are a partnership of equals. This lasting friendship is just one of many legacies left by Gandhi, which I am keen that we work hard to strengthen further.’
Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, the former Governor of West Bengal, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi, will speak at the ceremony. Lord and Lady Desai of the Gandhi Memorial Trust will be in attendance.
This will be the first time that Minister Jaitley visits the UK in an official capacity. In addition to unveiling the Gandhi statue, Shri Jaitley will meet the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, and Culture Secretary, Sajid David, as well as business leaders and top investors.
The ceremony, which is open to the public, will start at 10AM. The gates to Parliament Square will open at 9.15AM.
